Welcome to night eleven of our virtual 2020 Drax Golf Club Presentation Evening(s). 🎙
Yesterday we recognised the triumphs of this year's Elvin Dickinson Memorial Trophy by Liam Smith.
As mentioned in yesterday's post, Elvin was a much-loved greenkeeper at Drax for many years. But, if it wasn't for one man, there would be no golf course at Drax for Elvin to work at or for you all to enjoy to this day.
In around about 1987, after the completion of the 2nd half units, the Station Manager Mr John Davies (a member of Fulford GG) attended a meeting and offered the then Drax Power Golf Society the old construction tip located opposite the station to see if it could be cleaned up and made into a golf course; of course the society gratefully accepted. Because of this, it was decided to form a committee and tackle the development professionally. ⛳️
It was also John Davies who permitted a team led by Malcolm Hill, Head of the Materials Handling department, to provide the manpower and materials to build the course.
So tonight we thank Station Manager, John Davies who tonight's competition was donated to mark his generosity with regards works to commencing on the construction of the golf course.
This year the competition was won in style, with the winner cruising to a 4 shot lead from his nearest competitor. Congratulations to Geoff Othick who signed for an impressive 38 points in very difficult conditions where the CSS was at +2! 🏆
Well done Geoff
