As the leaves once again cover the ground it is time to review the last knockings of a remarkable season at Drax Golf Club. There were record entries in the monthly medals and senior competitions, with many members recording maiden victories. The golf club is grateful to all members who have participated in competitions in 2016.
The final month of the season saw the last medals being played with Steve Sutton a clear winner of Division 1, John Thompson snapped up Division 2 with his best round of the year and John Tate picked up a first trophy with victory in division 3. The final Monthly medal was illuminated by a superb round of 63 from Mark Webster to clinch the Division 2 prize and David Gisbourne, Division 1, and Michael Woodhouse Division 3, claimed the other honours.
The above winners all went into the Medal Finals but none of them could match the form of Dave Minto who scorched round with a tremendous 63 to lift the Division 1 title. Steve Simpson battled through Division 2 and George D Lawson was rewarded for a consistent year with the Division 3 gong! Sue Randall kept up her strong showing with a convincing win in the Ladies section.
Steve Sutton had a great month as he and his partner Liam Ridgill became the inaugural winners of the Autumn Open which is set to become a highlight of future seasons. Many visitors were welcomed to the event, however the home players just held everyone off with a win on countback with a superb 43 points.
The Seniors season came to a close with Mike Dobson recording a first win of the year, taking the final Cup award. The overall winner of the Senior Cup for the best 4 round total of the Year was vice captain David Littlefair who held off captain Matthew Forde and 2016 star player Dale Banks by 1 shot! The last senior Medal was won by the ever-dependable Gregor Pickston, however the Medal shield for best performance over the season was won convincingly by Dave Minto from his doubles partner Neil Hathaway.
The knockout competitions all concluded in the last few weeks. The prestigious men’s singles was a shoot out between 2 of the seasons outstanding players with Dale Banks just easing out Dave Minto on the penultimate green. The Ladies singles was won by Jenny Hammond who also triumphed with her partner Kevin Hudson in the mixed greensome event. The mixed doubles was won by husband and wife team Graham and Denise Smith. Denise joined partner Sue Randall to win the Ladies Doubles to complete a successful year for the popular club secretary! The men’s doubles title was won by a new partnership of Geoff Byrom and David Morgan enjoying their first year at Drax. Finally David Gisbourne completed a fruitful season by winning the much coveted Scratch Singles.
The trophies won this year will be presented at the club’s annual presentation on Friday December 2nd, all members and guests are welcome, a free buffet will be available at the event.
